My Tips for Beginning Yoga

I am just like you. I wake up like you. I take a shower like you, sometimes, a bath – but still like you. I eat like you. And lastly, I sleep like you sleep.

I’m a type of person that wants a great body, but I don’t really have the time to really commit to a gym two hours a day 6 days a week. I really wasted my money in the past trying to create that reality. I just couldn’t do it.

I have to work for a living, most probably like most of you. I have the same bills and probably the same type of debts you all have. The one thing I do have that most of you don’t all have is the body I always wanted.

Now that being said, I do have a great body.

It’s great because I’m not fat and I’m not super skinny either. I do have meat on my bones, and I like the way I look. I didn’t always like my body but as I got older, I started to like my body. It’s great! My body is great because I do yoga.

In the beginning, I was so negative to yoga. I thought of men sitting on rocks and just ‘thinking while they were sitting’ and that was all I knew. It wasn’t until a friend of mine invited me to go with her and just sit in on the side and watch. After seeing the men and women there doing yoga, it opened my eyes to a whole different world. There were men and women and a few kids and their bodies where very toned. Very flexible and their skin looked like a youthful type of skin. The kind you have as a young teen and somehow you lose it when you hit your 30’s.

I was looking at everybody, trying hard to not seem as though I am looking. And it looked so easy. The bending and stretching. The breathing. The releasing. Well, after investigating yoga on the Internet, I found out that there are quite a few yoga practices out there in the world. The more I read about yoga, the more I knew I was going to join and I did.

It has been many months since then. I went from being shy to showing my body to being more and more confident to show my body to the world. So if you want to enjoy a more youthful and more flexible body, these are my tips for you.

Do your homework on who offers the courses. You don’t want to go dragging your butt 50 miles everyday. You’ll burnout that way. Choose a yoga center near you.

Investigate what type of yoga you do want to perform. There are quite a few and trust me, there are people who would like to sit on a rock and meditate. If this is not for you and you want to be more physical, don’t be afraid to consult a yoga teacher.

How much is it per class? Is it per class or can you get a special price for taking a few classes. This stuff matters. You have to know the cost of the classes you will be participating in. You know, I went to three classes and just sat and watched and the lady that taught the class didn’t mind.

Does it bother you if the opposite sex is in your class? If so, find out up front if the class is for ladies only or not. Some men and women do mind that there is a guy or girl there. Especially when you’re going to the class to tone up and look great. You could save that co-ed class for when you start to feel your confidence coming back.

Clothes are always an issue for me. When I joined I hadn’t bought any clothes for a while and when I went to the class and became very diligent in going and exercising, clothes became a big issue with me not because I wanted to wear different clothing while I worked out. It was because as I was working out in a matter of three months, my clothes didn’t fit right. I was so chubby, when my clothes felt loose – it felt weird. As time went by, I had to say goodbye to that chubby kid I knew for so long that when I looked in the mirror and I mean really looked at myself in the mirror, I saw what the chubby teenager was hoping for.

I saw a new me. My eyes still have the same color and I still have my same laugh that drove my friends crazy, but I have a new body and deep inside, I’m still myself.

Another tip is this: You are going to need your own mat. Sometimes the mats that the classes provide are dirty or yucky or just plain gross that it will really require for you to just bring your own mat.

The most important tip I have for you is this: Give yourself time! I want to write this again, only this time in caps. GIVE YOURSELF TIME! So many people want to do to the class and they have unobtainable expectations. You can’t lose fifty pounds in one month! If you do, you might be in the hospital the very next day. So yes, give yourself time, time to heal, not only physically but mentally as well.

I really wish I could take the time out to tell you all the odd comments people have been giving me, from “you look good” to the weird comments like “who are you dating”? I’m not dating anyone. “I don’t believe it”. I’m not. “You’re lying”. “Why do you want to look so good?”

My second to last tip is this: buy a yoga book. A book with pictures or download them from the Internet so you could remember the posture and the breathing behind it. Sometimes, in yoga, it’s more about the breathing as well as the posture.

And lastly have fun. If you make it a game, it will be one and if it’s fun, you will go back again and again.

So when you want to try yoga, don’t forget my tips. And once you have the body that I am talking about here, don’t be scared or ashamed of it. You worked hard to achieve this. It’s your time to shine. I did it. I’m doing it. I will do it again. I don’t give up. I don’t give in. I’m just like you.
